PGT Sliding & Patio Doors: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If your PGT sliding door is sticking, dragging, or letting Houston humidity through a worn seal, we stock and install PGT-compatible sliding and patio door parts, and most repairs in the Houston area run between $210 and $580 installed, depending on the part and the door series. Homeowners usually find us the day the door refuses to slide without a two-handed shove, or when the July heat starts bleeding through a gap that was not there in April. The good news is that a PGT sliding door is a repairable door in most cases. The bad news is that ignoring a worn roller or a split seal turns a $220 repair into a warped frame or a damaged track, and that is a much bigger bill.

We are an independent Houston service provider. We are not affiliated with PGT, but we have worked on enough of their doors to know the 400, 700, 900, and WinGuard series by feel. Elliot Vance reviews every estimate personally before it goes out, so the price on the page is the price at the door.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT builds sliding doors in a few distinct families, and the part you need depends on which one you have. The 400 series is their entry aluminum line, common in Houston homes built from the early 2000s on. The 700 series is a heavier-duty aluminum frame, usually with a more robust roller assembly. The 900 series is their vinyl line, and it has its own roller carriage and lock geometry. The WinGuard series is PGT’s impact-rated door built for coastal wind zones, and it is the one we see most often in homes built to newer codes near Galveston Bay or in neighborhoods that adopted stricter storm construction standards.
The practical way to identify your door is the label on the frame edge: open the panel and look at the side rail near the top or bottom. PGT stamps a series code and a glass make-up code there, something like “PGT 400” with a string of letters and digits. If the label has faded, measure the visible glass width and the overall panel height. A 400 and a 700 can look alike from a distance, but their roller style does not interchange. We keep a set of calipers on the truck and we match the part by series, not by guesswork.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision: PGT factory parts exist, but lead times out of hurricane country can run three to five weeks, which is a long time to live with a door that will not latch. Quality aftermarket rollers, locks, and seals from the same extrusion suppliers PGT uses are often in our local stock today. We do not install cheap imported knock-offs that eat themselves in a season. Every part we install carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, so if it fails inside a year, we come back at no charge, full stop.
Signs Your PGT Sliding & Patio Doors Is Failing
- The door feels heavier every month, then starts grinding. The roller bearings have worn flat or the wheel delaminated. In Houston, the mix of heat, dust, and humidity accelerates wear on the plastic tire, and once the wheel stops rolling, it starts scraping the aluminum track. A $12 roller delayed long enough turns into a $170 track replacement.
- Air or daylight is visible at the top or bottom corner when the door is closed. The interlock seals or the adjustable foot bolt has compressed over time. You will feel it most in the kitchen on a hot afternoon. This is not just an energy leak; the same gap lets gnats and roaches in during a Houston summer.
- The door locks, but a firm shoulder near the latch pops it open. The lock’s keeper or the hook latch has worn out of tolerance. It is a security problem, not a nuisance. A sliding door that opens with body weight is an invitation, and Houston is not the city to leave that to chance.
- You have to pull up on the handle to get the panel to travel. The panel has dropped because the roller adjustment screws have walked down or the bottom rail has sagged. It is usually correctable without replacing the panel, but only if you catch it before the bottom track gets chewed up.
- Condensation builds between the glass panes in the morning. The insulated glass unit has lost its seal, and the desiccant inside is saturated. That is a replacement IGU, not a repair. PGT’s glass packs are straightforward to order, and we quote them as a discrete line item so you know exactly what you are paying for.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here is what we quote in Houston for the most common PGT sliding door failures, installed with the part and labor included:
| Repair Type | Typical Installed Cost | What It Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Single roller cartridges (bottom rail) | $210 – $320 | Two new matched rollers, adjusted and tested |
| Track repair or insert (single panel) | $270 – $440 | Track cap or insert, panel levelled, tested |
| Lock and keeper replacement | $180 – $290 | New latch assembly, matched keeper, adjusted |
| Weather seal and interlock replacement | $150 – $260 | All perimeter seals replaced and seated |
| Insulated glass unit (thermal seal failed) | $380 – $580 | New IGU spec’d to the door, installed and sealed |
The range comes down to two things: the series (WinGuard parts run higher because the hardware is heavier) and the condition of what is underneath the failing part. If the track is still straight and the frame corners are tight, you are at the low end. If the panel has been dragging for a year, we may need to true the frame, and that adds time. Every quote is line-itemed and printed before work starts, and the price does not change at the door. No Houston homeowner needs another surprise on a job that was quoted over the phone.
DIY or Call Us?
Sliding door rollers and seals are not in the same danger class as torsion springs or gas lines, so there is honest DIY room here. If you want to test whether a low-end roller swap is feasible, check the adjustment screws at the bottom corners of the panel. Turn them counterclockwise to drop the panel, lift it out of the track, and look at the wheel. If the wheel is flat-spotted and the axle is galled, a hand-tightened replacement can work. But that is where most homeowners get into trouble: the wrong roller diameter leaves the panel riding high or dragging, the panel goes back in cocked, and now the lock does not engage at all.
The failure we see most after a DIY attempt is a bound lock or a chipped track from a forced panel. Huston heat does not forgive a misaligned frame; the panel will bind worse by August. If you would rather not fight it, call (432) 278-2282. We will bring the part, swap it, level the panel, and set the lock in one trip, with the work warrantied in writing for a year.
FAQs
A PGT sliding door that is installed square and adjusted yearly will typically give you 18 to 25 years in Houston, with the rollers and seals needing replacement every 7 to 10. The weather takes its toll earlier on west-facing doors. If the frame is kept clean and the track is not used as a crumb tray, the door outlives most of the house. Call (432) 278-2282 for a straight assessment of where your door stands.
Repair is the right answer in the vast majority of cases: rollers, locks, seals, and glass packs are all replaceable parts, and we stock them for PGT, CGI, CWS, and ES Windows doors. Replacement makes sense only when the frame itself is out of square past adjustment or the track is too damaged to accept an insert. We will never push a full replacement where a $280 repair fixes the problem.
Most roller, lock, and seal repairs take 45 to 90 minutes on site. Glass unit replacements run about two hours because the old unit comes out cleanly and the new one must seat perfectly. The quote is free, and we will tell you the time window before we start.
We stock common PGT roller cartridges, lock sets, and seals in the truck and in our local Houston supply, so roughly 85 percent of sliding door repairs are finished on the first visit. Odd-size WinGuard hardware or non-standard glass packs may take a few days to source. Ask us when you call and we will tell you honestly which category your part falls into.
