ES Windows Window Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We keep ES Windows replacement sashes, balances, weatherstripping, and hardware in our Houston shop, and we install them for $280 – $640 per window depending on the part and series. Most ES Windows jobs in Houston are done same-day because the failure is almost always isolated to one component, not the whole frame. You’ll know the part failed when the window won’t stay up, won’t latch, won’t seal, or lets Houston humidity bleed through the edges every single morning.

ES Windows builds a specific product line, and that matters when a part goes bad. The company makes aluminum and vinyl windows rated for coastal and high-wind zones, which means their balances and locks are sized differently than what you’ll find at a Houston big-box store. What you need is a supplier who can look at the window, read the label, and pull the right window installation part the first time.
Elliot Vance reviews every ES Windows estimate that leaves our office, because he’s seen too many Houston homes where a generic part got forced into an ES frame and the window never worked right after.
Which ES Windows Models This Applies To
Most ES Windows sold in Houston fall into a few series, and each one takes slightly different hardware. The ES 600 and ES 700 series are single-hung and horizontal slider aluminum windows, common in homes built from the 1990s through the 2010s. The ES Impact line, built for hurricane-rated openings, uses a heavier frame and a different balance system than the standard series. If you’re not sure which one you have, look at the corner of the sash or the edge of the frame: ES Windows stamps the series code into the aluminum on almost every unit made after 2000.
One compatibility gotcha we run into in Houston regularly: ES Windows changed its balance shoe design around 2012, so a balance that fits a 2015 ES 700 will not work in a 2008 ES 700, even if the window looks identical. The old shoe is flat on the bottom; the new one has a rounded shoulder. We stock both because that ten-year range covers a huge number of Houston homes.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for ES Windows, we install OEM hardware when it’s available because the tolerances on the balance shoe and pivot bar are tight. On seals and weatherstripping, a quality aftermarket equivalent usually works fine and costs 20 – 30% less. We’ll tell you which route makes sense for your window, and the price goes on paper before we touch anything.
We also stock window hardware and window installation parts for PGT, CGI, and CWS windows, so if you have a mixed house, one call covers all of it.
Signs Your ES Windows Window Installation Is Failing
- The sash drops when you let go. This means the balance is worn or the pivot bar has slipped out of the shoe. In Houston, heat accelerates coil spring fatigue, so balances that would last 15 years in a mild climate often fail in 8 – 10 here.
- You have to lift the sash to get the lock to engage. The window has settled out of square, or the lock keeper is worn down. Forcing the lock just grinds the hardware faster.
- You feel air moving around the edges on a windless day. The weatherstripping has compressed permanently, or the sash is no longer seating against the frame. In Houston, this is usually salt air and humidity doing their slow work on the pile strips.
- Condensation builds between the panes in the morning. The insulated glass unit has lost its seal. That’s a fog unit, not a cleaning problem, and no amount of glass cleaner fixes it.
- The window is hard to open, or it jerks halfway up. The track is gummed with Houston grit and pollen, or the balance is binding. Lubricant only masks this; the root cause is usually a worn part.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, most ES Windows single-sash repairs run $280 – $425 installed. A full balance replacement with a new pivot bar lands around $340 – $500. If the insulated glass unit has failed and you need a new dual-pane IG, expect $450 – $640 depending on size and whether it’s impact-rated.
Here’s how the line items break down:
- Parts: $60 – $240 depending on the component (balance, pivot bar, lock, weatherstripping, or IG unit)
- Labor: $180 – $320, including haul-away of the old part
- Service call and diagnosis: included free when we do the repair
Every estimate from Meridian Windows and Doors Houston is a written line-item price before we start, and it does not move at the door. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, we come back at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Confirm the series code stamped on the sash, measure the visible glass width and height, and note whether the window is single-hung, slider, or casement. That information saves a trip and gets you an accurate quote faster.
Where DIY goes wrong on ES Windows is the balance system. The balances sit inside the window track and are under spring tension. When a coil spring balance lets go, it can snap with enough force to cut a hand or send a sharp metal end flying. That same warning applies to photo-height safety work and any window above the ground floor. We don’t coach homeowners through balance removal; we send a trained tech who has done it hundreds of times.
For anything involving the moving balance, the lock mechanism, or an IG unit, call (432) 278-2282. We’ll have a uniformed, background-checked technician out to look at it, and the diagnosis is free when we complete the work.
FAQs
In Houston’s heat and humidity, most ES Windows balances and locks last 8 – 12 years before they start showing wear, which is noticeably shorter than the 15 – 20 year lifespan the same parts see in drier, cooler climates. Salt air near Galveston Bay shortens that further by two to three years because it corrodes aluminum and eats at weatherstripping adhesive. If you’re at the 10-year mark and the window is starting to fight you, the part is telling you it’s done. Call (432) 278-2282 and we’ll give you an honest read on what’s left.
Yes, in most cases the window itself is fine and only the failed component needs replacing. We replace balances, pivot bars, locks, and weatherstripping all the time without touching the frame or replacing the whole window. The only time we recommend replacement is when the frame is bowed, the track is worn through, or the glass seal has failed in an older window that’s no longer worth a new IG unit. The price difference between repair and replacement is usually $400 – $800, so it’s worth a diagnostic call before you commit to either path.
Most single-window part replacements take 45 – 90 minutes on site, including cleanup and testing the window five or six times to make sure it operates like it did when the house was built. A balance replacement on an ES 700 typically runs around an hour. If we’re doing multiple windows or an impact-rated unit, we plan for two to three hours total. We’ll give you a finish time before we start, not after.
We stock the most common ES Windows balances, pivot bars, and locks in our Houston shop, especially for ES 600 and ES 700 series windows from the last 15 years. If your part is less common or you have an impact-rated unit, we typically have it in hand within 3 – 5 business days. Tell us the series code on your sash when you call (432) 278-2282 and we’ll tell you on that first call whether your part is on the shelf.
