Mr-Glass Window Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock Mr-Glass window installation parts for Houston homes, and most single-window replacement jobs run $380 to $920 installed, depending on glass package and frame condition. On a typical Mr-Glass window, a failed part like a worn balance or a cracked insulated glass unit can usually be swapped same-day if the window is a current production size. Most Houston owners find out something’s wrong because a window suddenly refuses to stay open, fogs between the panes, or starts letting a draft through that wasn’t there last spring.

Mr-Glass windows are built for coastal and high-humidity climates, which matters in Houston. The aluminum frames resist the moisture that eats wood sashes, and the hardware is spec’d for heavy use. But any window in our climate gets worked hard: heat, humidity, and occasional hurricane-force gusts all stress the moving parts. When something fails, it’s almost always the balance system, the weatherstripping, or the seal on the insulated glass unit. We keep the most common Mr-Glass replacement parts on the truck so a service call in Houston doesn’t turn into two visits.
Which Mr-Glass Models This Applies To
Mr-Glass manufactures two primary window series you’ll find in Houston homes: the aluminum single-hung/slider line and the impact-rated line shared with PGT and CGI in coastal applications. The compatibility gotcha most owners hit is that Mr-Glass hardware from the pre-2016 production run uses a different balance shoe than the current series, even though the frames look identical from the outside. If you replace a balance with the wrong shoe, the window will operate but sag at the bottom corners within a year.
To identify your window, look at the label etched into the top of the sash or along the frame edge. It lists the series number, glass package code, and date of manufacture. If the label is gone, we can identify it by measuring the visible glass width and the frame pocket depth. For Mr-Glass specifically, we recommend OEM parts when the window is under ten years old and still in production. For older discontinued sizes, quality aftermarket equivalents from Caldwell or Amesbury fit precisely and often outlast the original hardware. We’ll tell you which route costs less and why, with the price written down before we order anything.
Signs Your Mr-Glass Window Installation Is Failing
- Window won’t stay up or slides shut on its own. The balance system (the spring-loaded mechanism in the frame) has lost tension or a shoe has cracked. This is the single most common Mr-Glass failure we see in Houston, especially on windows that get opened daily during the eight months of the year we run the AC. The fix is a balance shoe or full balance replacement, not a new window.
- Condensation or haze between the glass panes. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed, letting Houston’s humid air inside the sealed airspace. The window still functions, but the glass will never clear on its own. The unit gets replaced, and the frame stays.
- You can see daylight or feel air moving around the sash when closed. Weatherstripping and pile seals have compressed or torn. On Mr-Glass aluminum windows, the pile carrier in the jambs wears flat after years of cycling. This is a $60 to $120 parts fix in most cases.
- The window is hard to open or binds halfway up the track. The frame has shifted slightly out of square, or debris and Houston humidity have corroded the track. A track clean and realignment often solves it; if the frame is badly racked, the window needs to come out and be reinstalled square.
- The latch or lock no longer engages. The keeper on the frame has moved or the lock cam is worn. On a first-floor Houston window, a latch that doesn’t engage is a security issue as much as an annoyance.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Mr-Glass window installation parts and labor run in Houston:
- Balance shoe or balance assembly replacement: $140 to $260 per window, including the part and the service call.
- Weatherstripping and pile seal replacement: $90 to $180 per window, depending on whether we’re doing one sash or the full frame.
- Insulated glass unit (IGU) replacement: $280 to $620 per window, driven by glass size, Low-E coating, and whether the unit is tempered or laminated. Impact-rated Mr-Glass glass runs higher.
- Full Mr-Glass window replacement (OEM-equivalent new unit): $520 to $1,100 installed per window for standard sizes, more for oversized or impact-rated units.
Every quote includes the part, the labor, haul-away of the old component, and a written price before anything is ordered. The work is covered by our written 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the part or the install fails within a year, we return at no charge. No fine print about labor exclusions. Elliot Vance personally reviews every estimate that leaves our Houston office before it reaches you.
DIY or Call Us?
On a Mr-Glass single-hung window, you can safely clean the track, tighten a loose keeper screw, and inspect the weatherstripping without pulling the sash out. That’s about where the safe DIY work ends. Removing a window sash to access the balance system requires releasing spring tension, and if the balance lets go while the sash is out, you’re looking at a broken window, damaged vinyl flooring, or a hand injury. We’ve fixed enough DIY attempts in Houston to say this plainly: the savings are not worth the trip to urgent care or the cost of a replacement sash.
A Meridian is a fixed line you measure everything against, and that’s how we handle Mr-Glass repairs in Houston. We show up when we say we will, the price is on paper first, and the fix is done right or we come back free. If your Mr-Glass window is fighting you, call (432) 278-2282 and describe what it’s doing. We’ll tell you over the phone whether we think it’s a balance, a seal, or a new sash, and what the likely range is before we schedule anything.
FAQs
Most Mr-Glass balance systems last 7 to 12 years in Houston’s heat and humidity before tension fades or a shoe cracks. Insulated glass seals typically last 10 to 15 years in a normal climate, but Houston’s humidity and temperature swings push many units into seal failure inside ten years. If your window fogs between the panes, the seal is done; call (432) 278-2282 and we can verify it in person.
Occasionally. A balance that’s slipped its carrier can sometimes be reset if the spring is still intact, and a track that’s binding can be cleaned and realigned. But most failed Mr-Glass parts (balance shoes, IGU seals, worn pile carriers) need replacement, not repair, because the wear material is physically gone. We’ll tell you which situation you have, and the price is the same either way once it’s written down.
A balance replacement or weatherstripping fix is usually a 30 to 60 minute job per window. A full insulated glass unit swap takes 60 to 90 minutes. A full window replacement runs two to four hours per window, depending on how much Houston weather has done to the rough opening. We’ll give you a clear time window when you book, and we honor it.
We stock the most common Mr-Glass balance shoes, pile seals, and hardware for current production series on our Houston service trucks, and we keep a running inventory of IGUs for the sizes we install most often. If your window is an older or odd size, we measure first and order the part, and we don’t charge you for the extra visit to confirm the measurement. Call (432) 278-2282 and we’ll check the part against your window label before we even schedule.
Meridian Windows and Doors Houston is an independent window and door contractor. We’re not affiliated with Mr-Glass, but we stock and install their products alongside PGT, CGI, CWS, ES Windows, ECO Window Systems, Therma-Tru, and ViewLux. The right part gets matched to the right window, and the price goes on paper before the order gets placed.
