CWS Window Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If your CWS window is dragging, leaking air, or the sash won’t stay up, you’re looking at a window installation issue that typically runs $220 to $480 per window installed in Houston, depending on the specific CWS series and what’s failed. We keep CWS-compatible balances, rollers, weatherstripping, and locks on the truck for most of the CWS product lines, so call (432) 278-2282 and we’ll match the part to your model the same day in most cases.

Most Houston homeowners discover a CWS window part failure the same way: a window that used to glide suddenly needs two hands and a hip check to open, or a bedroom starts feeling humid in August when it never did before. The part itself is rarely expensive. The real cost is what happens when a bad balance or worn roller gets ignored: the sash gets forced, the frame torques, and a $40 part becomes a $600 frame repair. That is the problem we solve before it gets there.
Which CWS Models This Applies To
CWS manufactured residential and light-commercial aluminum and vinyl windows across several series lines, and the part mix differs between them. The most common CWS units we see in Houston are single-hung and horizontal sliding aluminum windows from the 1995-2015 era, along with a smaller number of vinyl single-hung models from the 2005 and later production runs. The compatibility gotcha that trips up most DIYers is this: CWS used two different balance channel widths on their single-hung aluminum lines, 3/8″ and 1/2″, and the two are not interchangeable, even though both fit in a standard 3-1/4″ jamb pocket. If you order a 3/8″ balance for a 1/2″ channel window, it will seat but the sash will bind within a week.
To identify what you have, look for the CWS label etched or stickered on the top rail of the sash or the side jamb. If the label is gone, measure the visible glass width and height to the nearest 1/8″, then measure the channel width inside the side jamb where the balance sits. Write both numbers down before you call anyone; it saves a trip. One more thing worth knowing: CWS weatherstripping profiles were unique to their extrusion dies, so generic weatherstripping from a big-box store rarely seals correctly. That is why we stock CWS-compatible OEM-pattern stripping and balances rather than whatever happens to be cheapest in the catalog.
Signs Your CWS Window Installation Is Failing
- The sash drops or slams shut when you let go. This is almost always a failed block-and-tackle or spiral balance. Houston’s heat and humidity accelerate the internal lubricant breakdown, and once the tension cord frays, the window loses its counterweight.
- The window is hard to slide or has a grinding feel. Worn nylon rollers on a CWS horizontal slider or aluminum track contamination are the usual culprits. The grinding sound is the roller body dragging on the track after the wheel stops turning.
- Noticeable air movement around the closed sash. CWS weatherstripping compresses flat after 10-15 years in the Texas sun. Once it loses its memory, air moves freely around the sash perimeter; you’ll feel it most in the bedroom at night when the wind picks up.
- The lock doesn’t engage or the keeper is loose. CWS sash locks are cast zinc and the strike plate screws strip out of the aluminum frame over time. A window that doesn’t lock is also a window that is not pulling the sash tightly into the stripping, so air leakage follows.
- Condensation between the glass panes. This is a failed insulated glass unit seal, not a part you can replace from the outside. The glass has to come out and be reglazed or replaced; we can order a replacement IG unit matched to CWS glass thickness and spacer.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For CWS window installation repairs in Houston, here is what we currently see on real jobs:
- Balance replacement: $120-$180 per window, parts and labor
- Roller replacement (slider): $110-$160 per window
- Weatherstripping replacement: $90-$150 per window
- Sash lock and keeper replacement: $80-$120 per window
- Full window frame replacement (CWS-compatible): $600-$1,200 per window installed
These Houston prices include the part, the trip, the install labor, and cleanup. The spread comes down to CWS series, whether the jamb has been damaged from a prior forced opening, and whether we are replacing one window or several at the same address. Every estimate gets a written line-item price before any work starts, and that number does not move at the door. The work is covered in writing for 365 days under our Done Right Promise; if it fails within that year, we come back at no charge. You will also get a free second visit if anything we install fails inside the guarantee period.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely do: identify the CWS model label, measure the visible glass and channel width, and take a clear photo of the failed part. That gets us close on the first call, and it costs you nothing. What we do not recommend is pulling a CWS sash out without knowing how the balance is retained. CWS block-and-tackle balances on their single-hung aluminum line are under spring tension. If you release the sash without capturing the tension, that balance can snap back hard enough to break fingers. It does not happen often, but it happens. We would rather send a background-checked, uniformed technician out to your Houston home and handle it cleanly.
We carry common CWS balances, rollers, stripping, and locks on the service truck, so most repairs are a single visit. Call (432) 278-2282, tell us what the window is doing, and we will give you a straight answer about what it needs and what it will cost.
FAQs
A properly installed CWS aluminum or vinyl window lasts 20 to 30 years in Houston’s climate, but the serviceable parts, balances, rollers, and weatherstripping, have a real-world lifespan of 10 to 15 years before they need replacement. The frame often outlives two or three rounds of hardware. Call (432) 278-2282 if you want us to assess what yours needs.
CWS balances are sealed units; you replace them, not repair them. The good news is that the replacement is a 20-30 minute job for a technician with the right part. Call (432) 278-2282 for a written quote, free of charge.
Most CWS hardware replacements take 30 to 45 minutes per window, and a full frame replacement is a half-day job per opening. We show up when we say we will and the work is done before we leave the driveway. Call (432) 278-2282 to schedule your free estimate.
We stock common CWS balances, rollers, weatherstripping, and locks on the service truck across the Houston metro. For less common series or custom glass sizes, we order CWS-compatible parts with a typical 3-5 business day turnaround. Call (432) 278-2282 and we will tell you on that first call whether we have it on hand.
Meridian Windows and Doors Houston is an independent service provider. We install and service CWS products and parts but are not affiliated with CWS. We also stock and install products from PGT, CGI, and ES Windows, among the eight manufacturer lines we carry.
A meridian is a fixed line you measure everything against, and that is how we run every CWS window installation in Houston. Measure twice, seal it right, and the window does the rest of the talking. Elliot Vance reviews every estimate before it goes out the door. When you call (432) 278-2282, a live person answers, any hour, any day, and you get a written price before a single screw turns.
