PGT Door Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you need PGT door installation in Houston, we stock the rollers, hinges, handles, locks, weatherstripping, and glass panels for most PGT sliding glass doors and hinged patio doors, and we install them for $145 – $485 depending on the part and the door’s condition. Most jobs are done in a single visit because our trucks roll with common PGT replacement parts already on board. Owners usually discover a failed part when the door starts dragging, a handle stops latching, or a lock won’t turn without a fight. What started as a minor annoyance is now a door that won’t secure, won’t seal, or won’t open without two hands and a hip check.

We’re not affiliated with PGT. We’re an independent Houston door installation company that happens to carry their parts because PGT doors are common across the Gulf Coast and we’d rather fix yours right than watch you nurse a bad roller for another year.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT makes two door families we see most in Houston: the 5500 Series sliding glass doors (aluminum frame, common in homes built from the 1990s through today) and the 7700 Series (a heavier, impact-rated slider often specced in coastal and hurricane-prone builds). We also work on PGT hinged French doors and their WinGuard impact-rated line, which uses thicker glass and reinforced frames.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: PGT roller assemblies changed between the 5500 and 7700 series. The wheels have different diameters and the housing widths don’t swap. If you’re not sure which series you have, look at the glass. There’s a small etched label in one corner with PGT’s logo and a serial number. The first two digits after the model prefix tell us the series. If the label has worn off, measure the visible roller wheel. 5500 wheels are roughly 1-1/4 inch across. 7700 wheels run closer to 1-1/2 inch. Get that wrong and the door sits too high or too low, scraping the track or leaving daylight under the panel.
We install genuine PGT parts when the job calls for them and we use proven aftermarket equivalents when they match the original spec and save you money without cutting the door’s life short. Either way, you’ll see the exact part line-item on your written estimate before we order it.
Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing
- The door drags or makes a grinding sound when you slide it. This is almost always the roller assembly. PGT rollers have internal bearings that rust and seize, especially in Houston’s humidity. Pushing through it scores the track and turns a $145 roller fix into a track replacement.
- The handle turns but the latch doesn’t catch. The latch mechanism inside the handle set is a die-cast part. PGT handles take daily abuse, and the internal cam eventually strips. The handle still turns, but the tongue stops moving. That means the door won’t lock.
- The door locks but a gap stays visible at the meeting stile. The interlock, the portion where both panels meet, is out of alignment. This is usually a sagging panel from worn rollers or a misadjusted strike plate. The fix resolves the gap and gets the weather seal tight again.
- Water shows up along the interior track after a rain. The weatherstripping along the bottom of the panel has compressed or torn. In a Houston downpour, that pinhole becomes a puddle fast. Replacing the bottom sweep is inexpensive, but skipped too long, it warps the subfloor at the threshold.
- The door takes real force to open, then jumps forward suddenly. The track is dirty, the rollers are flat-spotted, or both. Houston’s clay-heavy soil shifts door frames slowly over the year, and a track that once rolled smooth begins to bind. Forcing it breaks the roller housing, which costs more than the cleaning or adjustment would have.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
PGT door installation in Houston breaks down into parts plus labor. Here’s what we see across the metro, from Katy to Kingwood to Friendswood:
- Roller assembly replacement: $145 – $260 per panel, including the part, track cleaning, and door re-leveling.
- Handle and latch set: $185 – $320, depending on whether we match a keyed lock or a standard latch.
- Weatherstripping and bottom sweep: $95 – $180 for a full refresh on both panels.
- Full panel re-glaze or glass replacement: $485 – $1,200 depending on glass type, Low-E coating, and whether it’s an impact-rated panel.
The price you’re quoted is the price you pay. It’s written down before any work starts, with the part and the labor split out separately, and it does not move at the door. No change orders. No surprise upcharges after the panel is out. Every PGT part installation is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the new part fails within a year, we return at no charge and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do the diagnostic work yourself. Check the track for debris. Feel whether the door rocks on one roller. Look at the weatherstripping profile along the bottom. Write down the etch stamp on the glass. That saves time when you call.
Beyond that, we suggest caution. A PGT sliding door panel with tempered or laminated glass runs 120 to 200 pounds. Lifting it out of the track without the right tools, a helper, and a plan for where it goes is how windows get cracked and toes get broken. The roller housings sit under spring tension in some older models, and releasing that tension incorrectly sends parts across the room fast. Even a handle swap can go sideways if the set screw strips in the frame and suddenly the whole panel needs a machine screw extraction. This is the point where the service call costs less than the fix you’ll need after the fix. Call (432) 278-2282 and we’ll walk through the symptom with you before we ever send a truck.
FAQs
Rollers typically last 7 to 10 years in Houston, with coastal homes or pool-facing doors losing 2 to 4 years off that due to salt air and humidity. Handles and latches usually make it 10 to 15 years before the internal cam strips. Weatherstripping is the shortest-lived part: 3 to 5 years of direct Houston sun and humidity before it compresses and loses its rebound. Call (432) 278-2282 and tell us what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you if it matches a known PGT wear pattern.
Rollers cannot be repaired. Once the bearing rusts or the wheel flat-spots, it’s done. Handles sometimes can be, but the repair usually involves replacing the internal latch mechanism anyway, which costs nearly as much as a new handle set. Weatherstripping never repairs. Replace it. We’ll give you a straight answer on the phone and only sell the repair path that makes sense.
Most roller, handle, and weatherstripping jobs run 45 minutes to 90 minutes once we’re on site. Glass panel replacement takes longer because the panel is cut or ordered to the exact size and the sealant needs time to cure. We’ll confirm the timeline in your written estimate before scheduling.
We keep common PGT 5500 and 7700 series rollers, handles, latches, and weatherstripping in our Houston trucks. That means most jobs happen the same visit. Unusual sizes, impact-rated glass, or older discontinued hardware may take a few days to source. We also stock compatible parts for CGI, CWS, and ES Windows doors, which cover a lot of the other impact-rated brands installed on the Gulf Coast. Call (432) 278-2282 for a free estimate and we’ll check stock while you’re on the line.
Call for a Written Estimate
The goal here is simple: get the part matched to your PGT door, get the number on paper before work starts, and get it installed by someone who does this every week. We show up when we say we will. The price doesn’t move. The work stands for a full year, in writing. If that’s the way you want the job run, call (432) 278-2282. Elliot Vance reviews every estimate before it goes out, and a real person answers the phone whenever you call. Measure twice, seal it right, and the window does the rest of the talking.
