PGT Window Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
PGT window installation in Houston typically runs $65 – $135 per window for sash, balance, roller, and weatherstripping work, while full replacement of a broken insulated glass unit runs $350 – $750 installed depending on size and coating. We keep common PGT replacement parts on our trucks, so most service calls are one visit. What usually brings a homeowner to this page is a window that suddenly won’t stay up, one that whistles during a Gulf Coast storm, or a bedroom window that fogs between the panes and won’t clear – all signs of a failed component, not necessarily a failed window.

Meridian Windows and Doors Houston is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with PGT, but we install and replace their products every week, and we stock the parts that fail most often in this climate.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT makes three product families we see most in Houston homes: the 500 series, the 700/770 series, and the WinGuard impact line. Each uses slightly different balance systems and hardware, and that matters when you’re matching a part. A balance from a 500-series double-hung will not fit a WinGuard 770 – the shoe profile and spring rating are different. If you can read the small white label on the top or side of the sash, there’s usually a seven-digit PGT order number. That number is the fastest way to identify exactly which part your window takes.
We carry genuine PGT replacements and quality aftermarket equivalents for common items like pivot bars, tilt latches, and weatherstripping. For balances and spring systems, we recommend OEM. The aftermarket balances we’ve tested don’t hold calibration as well after a couple of Houston summers. For latches and sweeps, a good aftermarket part is usually indistinguishable in daily use and often costs $10 – $20 less. We’ll tell you which is which before we install anything.
Signs Your PGT Window Installation Is Failing
- The sash drops when you open it or won’t stay raised. That’s a spring balance that’s lost tension or snapped internally. It’s the single most common service call we run on PGT windows in Houston – heat and humidity are hard on coil springs.
- You hear wind whistling with the window fully closed and locked. The weatherstripping has compressed or torn, or the sash isn’t seated squarely. A small gap of 1/16 inch is enough to lose meaningful conditioned air in July.
- Condensation or haze between the panes that never goes away. The insulated glass seal has failed. The fix is replacement of the glass unit itself, not the whole window, as long as the frame is still sound.
- The window is hard to close or requires real force to lock. The sash has shifted in the frame, or the pivot bar is binding. Forcing it closed will eventually crack the corner joint, which turns a $35 repair into a $300 one.
- Tilt latches feel loose or the sash flops inward when you try to clean the outside glass. The spring-loaded tilt latch is worn. This is a five-minute swap with the right part and a frequent failure on windows that get cleaned regularly.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Most PGT window installation work in the Houston area falls into three price bands. Replacing a single broken balance takes about 30 minutes and runs $65 – $135 per sash, including the part. Swapping a full set of weatherstripping on one window runs $85 – $160. Replacing a fogged or damaged insulated glass unit runs $350 – $750 installed, depending on glass size, low-E type, and whether it’s impact-rated.
- Balance replacement (per sash): $65 – $135 installed
- Weatherstripping (per window): $85 – $160 installed
- Insulated glass unit replacement: $350 – $750 installed
- Tilt latch or pivot bar hardware: $45 – $90 installed
Every quote is on paper before we touch the window, and that number does not move at the door. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within the first year, we come back at no charge. That covers parts and labor, and there’s no fine print about exclusions.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check which label is on your sash and clean out the track with a shop vacuum – that solves more problems than most people expect, especially in Houston where fine dust and pollen build up fast. You can also note whether one sash or both are failing, because that tells us a lot before we even arrive.
Where we’d stop you is on balance replacement and spring system work. Window balances are under significant tension, and when one pops loose during a DIY attempt, it takes fingers and drywall with it. PGT balances are also directional – left and right are different parts. Install them backward and the window may slam shut on its own. That’s not a warning we give lightly; it’s a call we get too often. If you’d rather not deal with any of it, call us at (432) 278-2282 and be done with it.
FAQs
Expect 8 to 12 years from balances and weatherstripping in Houston’s heat and humidity. Tilt latches and pivot bars often go in 6 to 10 years, faster if the window gets cleaned frequently. Insulated glass seals typically last 10 to 20 years in this climate.
Some parts we rebuild; most we replace. Balances are replaced, not repaired, because a retired coil spring never holds reliable tension. Weatherstripping is always replaced. Tilt latches and pivot bars are replaced. Insulated glass units are rebuilt by a local glazier we trust and then installed by us. Call (432) 278-2282 for an exact quote on your window.
Most single-part replacements take under an hour on site. Insulated glass replacement takes one visit to measure and a second to install, usually one to two weeks apart depending on glazier lead time. We’ll give you the timeline in writing before the first appointment.
We stock the fast-movers on our trucks: balances, tilt latches, pivot bars, and standard weatherstripping profiles for the PGT series lines. Special-order items like impact-rated insulated glass units are ordered to spec, usually with a one to two week lead time in the Houston area. Call (432) 278-2282 and we’ll check what’s applicable to your window.
